New exhibitions are opening in New York all the time.
This is our choice of the best of the latest.
NEW YORK NOW (APRIL-MAY)
PABLO PICASSO
Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, NY 10075 T: 212 744 2313
This exhibition opens in May at the international Gagosian
Gallery. It is sure to be a popular retrospective of the artist as
it focuses on the period between 1943 and 1953 when French painter
and author Francoise Gilot was his muse. She would later become the
mother of his two children and this abstract exhibition defines
their relationship and his attitude towards her. He was 40 years
her senior and even after their relationship ended Gilot would be
harassed on the streets of Paris by Picasso's wife. Through 30
June.
FRANCESCA
WOODMAN
Guggenheim, 1071 5th Avenue, NY 10128 T: 212 423 3618
This is the first retrospective of the American photographer,
Francesca Woodman who was working at a pivotal time in American
photographic and video history. Not only does this exhibition
explore Woodman's interest in the human body and self-portraiture,
but it also looks at female subjectivity and the relationship
photography has with literature and performance. Crucial to the
exhibition is Woodman's age, she began photographing at the tender
age of 13 and her career blossomed until her sad death by suicide
in 1981. She was 21 years old.
